While in Australia we are heading into a few months of hot summer heat, India is preparing for their winter season.
Winter runs through December, January and February, and Varanasi sees maximum temperatures fluctuate between 15 degrees celsius to 20 degrees celsius. The days become shorter and nights become longer, and the cold winds from the Himalayas start sweeping through the city. The winter season provides a much needed relief from the incredible summer heat in India. People can work longer due to the lower temperatures, and the air feels fresher.
The cold season is not all great as it produces some issues for poorer citizens, such as some of the families we have here at the Education Centre. Because it's easier to work during the day, people can be at risk of overwork. It can also be difficult for these families to attain warm clothing and properly heat their homes.
At the Education Centre, we do what we can to make sure our children stay warm and well during the cold season, so they can continue to learn. Some popular meals at the Centre in the cold months is Pasta, Noodles, and Egg and Bread.
